Pretty major earthquake today in Japan. 8.9 magnitude 80 miles off shore of Sendai, Japan. This is about 250 miles north of Tokyo. Reported 33ft tsunami.

Keep those people in your prayers.

Toyota shut down 1 parts plant and 2 manufacturing plants Friday. Next week may see more. I was off Friday, so I don't know what Nissan will do. Most of their facilities are around the Tokyo area, 1 north and the rest south, I believe.

We have a few people that are supposed to go to Japan the end on this month and be in and out over the spring and summer. I don't know what the status is for those trips.

My biggest concern is the nuclear power plant.

Japan needs all kinds of help. We have seen other Countries going through hard times America seems to be the first to step up. We ask ourselves why the Lord permits things like this to happen. And we answer "I don't know". Above all the help we can give Japan it needs our prayers. It will take time and they will learn from this and come back a stronger Country.

All of my Japanese counterparts and bosses at work said their families are all safe right now. But Nissan has 2 manufacturing plants and a transmission plant in the affected area. Unfortunately, the tranny plant supplies trannies for us and the Smyrna facility.

Here are several questions i asked.
Hey Carol, I've been hearing this question a lot lately, "When is the next big one?". Can you and the CNN team investigate and ask government officials (USGS) if there is a link between melting glaciers and increase of earthquake activity? Glaciers lighten the load (less pressure) on tectonic plates. This can lead to plates moving more freely, with little resistance, possibly causing geological events like what we saw in Japan and Chile. If the predictions from NASA and other scientists come true, regarding to increase in solar storm activity in 2012-2013, will we see further increase in earthquake activity, that can lead to American deaths on the West Coast? I apologize to those who were unaware and now in fear of my silly questions. Another question i have for experts, does the recent volcanic activities from Hawaii and Japan (January and March) have any relation to the 9.0? Was the Hawaii eruption on March 5th a warning? I'm pretty sure i know what they'll say, but i'd like to have a professional opinion and I'm sure this would be a good story to tell.

I don't know if you could predict an earthquake and its strength to the point people could move to safety at the right moment. Could you say there was a volcanic eruption, therefore there could be an earthquake...sure, and I believe a little of that does happen. But do you want to induce mass hysteria with the public for something that may not, and most likely won't happen, within an acceptable time period? After a time or two with no incident, the public will stop reacting to the warning.

Amazing road recover in the one photo showing the road 6 days later. They really are hard working people. The ones I have worked with hear as well as there spend too much time at work.
We have a few people leaving for Japan this weekend to get ready for next model changes on the Altima.
