Nissan Tiida takes 3rd for consecutive podium finish
-- China Touring Car Championship Round 2 Race Report --
June 28th, Shanghai Tianma Circuit: Round 2 of the China Touring Car Championship (CTCC) was held in Shanghai, China with Lin Lifeng in the #2 Dongfeng Nissan Ghia Sports Team's Nissan Tiida taking 3rd place in the 1600cc class.
The Shanghai Tianma Circuit is a medium-slow speed course measuring approximately 2km, and because the track is quite narrow it was expected that starting positions would determine the winner. As per the results of the previous day's qualifier, the final race would start with the #1 Tiida (Guo Haisheng) third on the grid, and the #2 Tiida (Lin) in sixth.
In the midst of the 35-degree mid-summer heat, the 45-minute final race began. When the signal changed to green all cars accelerated at full throttle, but soon after the start a few cars became caught up in a crash. Guo in the #1 Tiida managed to avoid the accident, but Lin in the #2 machine was unable to stay clear and came into contact with a stricken vehicle. As a result, he dropped back to last place. In the latter part of the race the lead group was made up of the #3 KIA, #9 HAIMA, and the #1 Tiida. After passing the turn-in point, the 1st-place #3 KIA suddenly slowed down and made a pit stop. The race leader changed to the #9 HAIMA.
Meanwhile, the #2 Tiida had been struggling to climb up from last place, continually passing rivals one by one with each lap, and reaching 4th by the midpoint of the race. Along with the #1 car of Guo in 2nd place, the two Tiidas reached the final stretch while willing friction into their tyres, and took the checkered flag after 35 laps in 2nd and 4th places.
After the race the #1 Tiida was disqualified due to a violation of technical regulations. As a result of this, Lin Lifeng and the #2 Tiida moved up to 3rd place.
The next round of the series takes place on July 26th at the F1 circuit in Shanghai.
*China Touring Car Championship (CTCC)
The touring car series held in China was known as the CCC (China Circuit Championship) series until 2008. The Dongfeng Nissan Ghiasports team is represented in the 1600cc class with a pair of Nissan Tiidas, with Nissan/Nismo providing engineering support. This year's championship takes place over 6 races at the following circuits: Shanghai F1, Shanghai Tianma, Beijing and Guangdong.
