I did this on my Titan today after seeing posts on the other spot about it. However, most people use a brass 1/8" NPT x 5/16" barbed hose adapter. this adapter would not thread into the hole on the axle. I did not want to chase the threads (as others have done) for fear of ruining them and not being able to use the OEM breather or the brass barbed hose adapter. I found out that Toyota part # 90404-51026 works perfectly with the threads in the axle. 3.

BTW, the Fronty and Titan share (believe it or not) the same rear end so this mod is good to go for both trucks. 166

Parts used:

6 ½' of ¼ fuel line
Fram fuel filter G1DP (which came with clamps) so I didn't have to use the hose clamps
Toyota part # 90404-51026 union
3 zip ties

Remove tail light assembly (10mm) x2 after removing bolts slide fixture outwards towards back of truck.

Inside light well

Install filter and run hose down through bottom of tail light well. Then route hose through the frame and zip tie to secure. Leave enough slack for maximum suspension extension.

Why do this mod you may ask?

1- It is inexpensive (less than $25) and offers better venting than the OEM vent. I have read a couple of stories where Titan guys have gone to do this mod and when they removed the OEM breather valve they hear air escaping. That meant the axle/rear diff was under pressure signifying a faulty breather valve. That may explain the many reported axle seal failures on the Titan.

2- If you go off-roading and submerge your rear axle you could get water mixed in with your rear differential oil.

3- If you trailer a boat and have shallow launch conditions your rear axle will be submerged and have the possibility of getting water mixed in with your rear differential oil.

Shallow launch, I put a plastic bag over the OEM vent and secured it with a rubber band for this launch at lake Mead last year.

4- Another inexpensive reason to wrench on you truck.

I have to give credit for this mod to Honeykeeper @ titanspot. Thanks Tom!
Next up..... Titan finned aluminum differential cover for Sandi's truck and the axle vent mod.
I just commented on the lack of vent tube on the Fronty to nismogone and this is the 1st post I pulled up tonight. Thanks for the write up.

Funny thing is... The front differential on the Titan and Fronty have a set up like this (but not on the rear). So do the "big 3" Go figure.... 179
Nice work! Really! 164
nice writeup 185

Kinda scary that even just hauling a boat can risk your diff..Gonna make me think twice
Thanks for that, I will be pulling a boat early next year.
Awesome write-up. This is a mod I've been meaning to do forever, just never got around to it.
sounds great. how did the install go on sandi's truck? all the same parts? she's got the same c200 rear that i have, so i'm just double-checking.

i'm rolling up on 30k in a month or so, and i figure i'll bang this one out while i'm under there changing diff fluid.

thanks!
krh2, how has this been working out. Is there sufficient air flow through the Fram fuel filter?

I still haven't done this. I haven't had the need to submerse my axle in liquid, yet. We do get enough rain from time to time that does cover some of the local roads. A couple years ago, we had heave rains and I had to cross some deep water. It wasn't running across the road, so I wasn't worried about washout. I was in my Jeep at the time and didn't have to worry about this issue.

This was brought to the attention of design back in 04, but was not done as a cost savings. Go figure. The dealer in Hattiesburg, MS tried to give Ben (nismotrucker) the run-a-round about water in the diff when he had to get his replaced.
ive got the stuff in the back of my truck and has had it for about a month now but hadnt taken the time to rig it up!
KRH2, Nice write up, X many, I will be towing into salt water soon so this is a bonus for me.
krh2, sandi...nothing to say about this?

Airflow is better than the oem breather. I tested both with my "built in compressor" Besides being able to submerse your axle it offers better air flow. Many Titans have axle seals going bad and most think it is due to the oem breather. One guy did this mod and when he took the oem breather off he could hear air escaping = axle under pressure = BAD.

You really dont need the filter but most of us are putting one on so if there is a problem it will show up in the filter media.

Same parts / less hose.
Update: Nissan also make a part like the toyota part I used for this mod.

thanks for the update! this write up will help a load!
Anybody know the thread spec? I assume its pipe thread but what size? it looks pretty fine. m10x1 or something?

I'm trying to get the new axle on this weekend and I don't want to reuse the stock crap.

Some guys just used 1/8" brass fitting but the threads dont quite match the hole in the axle. I am changing the diff oil in the fronty today and will do the breather install on it as well. I will document both.
Can you check the temp difference before and after when you do the Fronty.

Thanks

Thanks

I read this too late, sorry no before temp readings.
